Listen to the Story: 10 minutes

Description:

The Shaw Memorial is acclaimed by many as the greatest American sculpture of the nineteenth century. It portrays Colonel Robert Gould Shaw with members of the Massachusetts 54th regiment, one of the first African American units to fight in the Civil War. In 1863, 600 men from this regiment fought valiantly in the assault on Fort Wagner near Charleston, South Carolina. Nearly half died in battle, including Colonel Shaw.
